Gretna Green is the first village over the border from England. Since 1754, runaway couples have crossed into Scotland to marry here, and the blacksmith at the Old Smithy became the most famous wedding celebrant in Britain. The marriage anvil is still in the Famous Blacksmiths Shop.
Along the Solway coast, Caerlaverock Castle is the only triangular castle in Scotland, ringed by a moat. A few miles west, Sweetheart Abbey takes its name from Lady Dervorgilla, who kept her husband’s embalmed heart with her for 21 years and was buried with it here.
