Heading from Glasgow to St Andrews for golf, graduation or a weekend away? Here is every realistic way to make the journey, with honest times and trade-offs.
There is no direct train to St Andrews — the nearest station is Leuchars, six miles away. By road it is about an hour and three quarters, and the car takes you all the way to the door.
St Andrews sits on the Fife coast, around 80 miles north-east of Glasgow. Public transport works, but every option involves at least one change: a train to Leuchars followed by a local bus or taxi, or a coach with a longer journey time. With golf clubs, luggage or a group, that change is where the trip gets harder.
Here are the four ways to travel, at a glance — then in detail.
| Option | Journey time | Changes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train + bus from Leuchars | about 2h15–2h45 | 1–2 | Light travellers on a budget |
| Coach | about 2h30 | Depends on route | The lowest fare, with time to spare |
| Driving yourself | about 1h45 | None | Those who want a car in Fife — if parking is sorted |
| Private chauffeur | about 1h45 door to door | None | Golfers, groups, luggage and special occasions |
Times are typical and vary with traffic, connections and time of day. Check ScotRail and Stagecoach for current timetables and fares before you travel.
Trains from Glasgow reach Leuchars, the station for St Andrews, usually with a change at Edinburgh or Dundee. From Leuchars a frequent local bus runs into St Andrews in around 15 minutes, and there is a taxi rank at the station. Allow two and a quarter to two and three quarter hours in total. It works well for light travellers; with golf bags it means lifting them on and off two or three times.
Stagecoach runs express coaches from Glasgow towards Fife, with journeys to St Andrews taking around two and a half hours. It is usually the cheapest option, but the slowest, and luggage space is limited.
The drive takes around an hour and three quarters via the M80 and M90. The challenge is at the other end: St Andrews is a small town, parking is limited and much of the town-centre parking is metered, and it can be hard to find a space during tournaments, graduation and summer weekends.
